Dry Air Hall

The PMH Dry Air Hall is an ideal and energy-efficient store for materials sensitive to damp. The hall's airtight design allows the internal environment to be control efficiently by dehumidification without any need for thermal insulation.

The storage hall with inbuilt dehumidification

Dry Air Halls from PMH have many advantages compared to conventional buildings. The entire space in the hall is well-lit, because the white PVC roof lets in the daylight, and there are no supporting posts on the floor, because the arch shaped design helps to keep the hall stable. To obtain efficient dehumidification, the hall needs to be sealed along the bottom edge. This means that this hall must stand on an asphalted surface to allow us to fasten the seal to the ground properly. With an airtight design and a dehumidifier unit, we create a perfect environment for materials sensitive to damp. The hall is available in several different versions, sizes and colours.

Many materials can be stored here very well; such as iron, sheet metal and aluminium to prevent corrosion, paper packaging to prevent it from softening can collapsing and electronics and electrical components to prevent oxidisation. Dry Air Halls reduce the risk of textiles, timber, leather and grain becoming mouldy and prevent dry products such as cement and commercial fertilizers clumping.

How do you guarantee the environment for your damp sensitive products?

Many products are sensitive to damp, for example, corrugated cardboard is one of the materials that absorb moisture from the air. In order for corrugated cardboard to maintain a good condition, and to be stored for a long time, it is necessary to keep the relative humidity below 50 %. Untreated steel requires a relative humidity of 50-55 % to prevent corrosion. To store these types of products, the relative humidity in the storage space needs to be lowered from the normal 70-85 %. We use a type of dehumidifier called an adsorption dehumidifier, because it is energy-efficient and superior for use at low temperatures.

It is important to bear in mind not to leave gateways and doors open for too long, because this lets in more damp air, which means the dehumidifier units have to work harder. If an electronic gateway is installed, it is easier to keep the doors closed properly. Also bear in mind that load pallets that have stood outside can contain a lot of water, which also increase the humidity rapidly when they enter the tent hall.

Dehumidification

Dehumidification is necessary when storing materials sensitive to damp. The moisture content in the air needs to be lowered in order to be able to guarantee the quality of particularly sensitive products, for example cement etc., which easily absorb moisture from the air, or electronics that oxidise on contact with moisture. The humidity is normally around 70-85 % and this needs to be reduced to approx. 50 % to obtain the best possible climate.

There are various methods of dehumidification and we use adsorption dehumidification, This is an effective and energy-efficient method, where the moisture is extracted from the air through the dehumidifier in a way that means there is no need to empty containers of condensation water, instead is disappears along with the cold air from the dehumidifier. For it to be possible to dehumidify a tent hall, it must be airtight, for which reason it is a requirement that it stands on an asphalted surface to allow the sealing to be done properly.

Seal

When dehumidifying a tent hall, it is important that the hall is really airtight, in order for the dehumidification to be as effective as possible. As standard, the hall is sealed against the ground by a pressure impregnated batten that is fastened to the ground along all sides of the hall. On the outside of this, a molten bitumen strip is laid, which forms a fillet against the ground, restricting any water from running in. On the outside of this, the cloth is glued in place, and the hall becomes airtight. See picture

Operating cost

Dehumidification is a very cost-effective technique for attaining a controlled climate. Compared to heating, to combat damp problems, the energy consumed is a fraction. The dimensioning of the dehumidifier unit is based on weather data from SMHI. In winter, the air is drier and the energy consumption is, then, minimal.
